Course Reflective Narrative
Service learning was a class in which I traveled to a local elementary school along with three other Japanese students to teach about aspects of Japanese culture. Service learning was focused on MLO one and two. We were sharing Japanese culture with the students at the school and we had to convey to them ideas and concepts in an easy to understand way. Translating not only for the Japanese Students I was working with but also the ideas behind some of the cultural practices was at times difficult. However this was also one of the most rewarding aspects as well. Being able to facilitate communication with the kids and also share some of my interests with them was a great experience. I plan on being an English teacher in Japan after I graduate. I know that my experiences in service learning will help me greatly not only in terms of having teaching experience but also in communicating ideas while I am teaching. I know that it will be difficult for me to teach when the people I am teaching speak a different language. I hope that my skills in Japanese and teaching both improve though over time which I am sure they will if I set my mind to it.
I have below my final paper and presentation for this class and one of the journal entries I wrote. Service learning is one of the best parts of the program at CSUMB. By doing community service for children it has instilled in me a greater need to want to improve my community. Social issues should be at the forefront of everyones mind because the affect everyone. Making life better for your neighbor makes your life better as well. I will carry this rewarding experience with me always and strive to continue to better the world around me.
